Kiwi singer Thomston has released his debut album, Topograph.

The 13-track release features early singles 'Collarbones', 'Float' and 'Window Seat', which features Australian songwriter Wafia.

The album debuted at number seven in the iTunes top 10, alongside heavyweight artists such as Bon Iver, Passenger and Shawn Mendes.

Thomston told Newshub it was gratifying to release a full-length record after the "stepping stones" of his early EPs.

"A full-length has a lot more weight to it; it's a statement, and to release one obviously comes with a bit more pressure for this to represent me well.

"It feels so good to finally release it, to let it become anything to other people," he said.

The album is a culmination of two years' worth of writing, touring and recording, and was completed about halfway through last year.

He began writing the record in 2014, and wrote tracks in LA, New York and London.

Thomston says his favourite track on the album is 'The Shortchange'.

"It went through many iterations, and when I reached one I was finally happy with, it was a huge payoff.

"I think, 'You got scared, I get it. But you didn't say you loved me when it mattered,' might be the most cutting line on the record," he says.

Though fans now have 13 new tracks to get familiar with, Thomston says his next record is already in the works.

"I'd lose my mind if I stopped writing. I get so bored," he says.

Twenty-year-old Thomston is Thomas Stoneman, an Avondale College graduate who made waves with his early EPs, Argonaut and Backbone.

Saiko, Lorde's previous management company, has overseen Thomston's career so far, and comparisons with the 'Royals' singer have been drawn for the artists' shared alt-electronica production and smooth vocal styles.

Meanwhile, fans eagerly anticipate Lorde's sophomore album, which the singer said was written and "in the production stage" in August.
