A vegan blogger has posted a video of her crying over the treatment of sheep crossing the Cook Straight.
Vlogger Kristin Lajeunesse was travelling from Picton to Wellington when she went to the back of the boat to look at the view of the Marlborough Sounds but was confronted by something she was not expecting.
"I came to that back of the boat because I thought it would be, you know, beautiful," Ms Laujeunesse said as she wiped tears away.
But instead she came across something she found very confronting - a truck carrying sheep.
"I'm so sorry... I just feel so hopeless and so bad for them."
The video has already had more than 334,000 views since it was posted on Tuesday and the blogger is facing backlash from Kiwis taking aim at her reaction.
Chris Pemperton defended New Zealand's farming sector, saying: "It's how this country was developed and how it continues to grow."
"This is part of how we make our money. Our families survive off of these well looked after lambs."
Others pointed out there is nothing wrong with how the animals are being transported, while Russell Mackay said it didn't look like the animals were in any imminent danger.
"They look like breeding stock in good health and with plenty of years left in them = not actually going to end up on a plate anytime soon. Just going to a different farm."
Ms Laujeunesse did have some online supporters, one of whom responded simply with emojis.
Fellow supporter Giselle Kuchirka agreed it was heartbreaking.
"Thank you for bearing witness. It's not easy," she wrote.
However not everyone took the issue so seriously - Scott Lopdell's comment has received more likes than the original video.
"I know exactly how you feel.. Today i saw someone pull a cabbage out of its natural habitat and chuck it straight in a pot of water and boiled it alive. Inhumane."
