Big stars and good reviews aren't always enough to guarantee a film won't bomb at the box office.

Forbes Magazine has compiled a list of the top 10 biggest flops of 2016, which includes some surprising appearances.

Comedy dominated the list, including Sacha Baron-Cohen's Grimsby and the Jane Austen spoof Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

Zach Galifianakis, formerly a bankable comedy actor, starred in two films on the list - Keeping up with the Joneses and Masterminds.

While those films may also have received highly negative reviews from critics, well-received comedies weren't spared audiences' indifference.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, the sixth-lowest performer of the year, received generally good reviews from critics and starred several household names, including Tina Fey, Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, from musical comedy act The Lonely Island, was also widely praised but drew only US$9.5million from an estimated budget of US$20million.

Several dramas also cracked the list, with Oliver Stone's Snowden at number nine, and the Matthew McConaughey-led drama Free State of Jones at number two, recouping less than half of its US$50million budget.

Perhaps even more surprisingly, a superhero film - a genre which frequently crosses the billion-dollar mark - tops the list, at number one.

Max Steel, based on the eponymous toy-line from Mattel, grossed less than US$4.5million - just over half what the film cost to produce.

In addition to focusing on a relatively unknown title character, the film's critical slamming and cast of less-known actors could possibly be to blame for its financial failure.

While the films in the list below may have been the year's worst-grossing, 2016 is still on-track to be the biggest year for cinema thanks to an impressive blockbuster season.
