Lizard makes heart-stopping escape from snakes in Planet Earth II

A lizard's high-energy escape from half a dozen snakes is being hailed as possibly the greatest scene in documentary history.

The heart-pounding footage was released as part of BBC's Planet Earth II documentary series, a follow-up to its famous 2006 series.

The young lizard is seen having stumbled into a minefield of snakes; it stays perfectly still to avoid detection, as the snakes have poor eyesight.

But despite its efforts and a stare-off, a snake lunges, and it's forced to take off at top speed.

And thus begins a thrilling chase which truly highlights the dog-eat-dog world of nature.

Snakes pour out of the nearby rocks and quickly tackle the lizard hatchling, accompanied by high-energy music.

But by the skin of its tail, the lizard manages to dodge the near certain death, leaving the snakes to slither back to their own homes.
