Actor Robert Vaughn, most famous for his role in cult TV show The Man from UNCLE, has died at the age of 83.

The celebrated actor died after a fight with acute leukaemia, according to his manager, Matthew Sullivan. He died in New York on Saturday morning (NZ time) surrounded by his family.

In addition to UNCLE, Vaughn will be remembered for iconic roles in The Magnificent Seven, Coronation Street and TV drama Hustle, which revitalised his career.

David McCallum, who co-starred with Vaughn in The Man from UNCLE, told TVLine.com he was "utterly devastated" by the news.

"Robert and I worked together for many years and losing him is like losing a part of me. My deepest sympathies go out to Linda and the Vaughn family," he said.

Vaughn had recently completed two starring roles in upcoming projects, including a lead in the film Gold Star, about a young woman caring for her dying father.

His death has been met with sadness from many in the acting community, with his Hustle co-star Adrian Lester, as well as Stephen Fry, among those tweeting tributes.
