As the US votes for its next President, celebrities are taking to social media to announce who is getting their tick.

While Hollywood traditionally supports the Democratic Party and this year there's undoubtedly more star-power in support of Hillary Clinton, there are a number of famous people publicising their support of her Republican rival, Donald Trump.

Los Angeles-based Kiwi actress Rose McIver posted an historical image on Instagram with an impassioned message about how far women's rights have come.

"Hey ladies, 100 years ago we didn't have the right to vote. Today, we can elect a female president," wrote the iZombie star.

"Not just 'because she's a woman', but because she stands for progress, is overwhelmingly better than the alternative and is the candidate who is capable of leading America. #imwithher."

The post has attracted more than 10,000 likes and nearly 148 comments, many from commenters not impressed with the pro-Clinton sentiment.

Pop star Rihanna took to Twitter to post an image of her wearing a T-shirt of herself wearing a T-shirt of Ms Clinton, also using the #ImWithHer hashtag.

In the Trump camp, former boxer Mike Tyson, rapper Azealia Banks, former wrestling star Hulk Hogan, former NBA star Dennis Rodman, Cheers star Kirstie Alley, musicians Kid Rock and Ted Nugent, reality TV stars Caitlyn Jenner and Tila Tequila, and actor Randy Quaid have all endorsed the former Celebrity Apprentice host.

Famous Clinton supporters include Beyonce, George Clooney, Lady Gaga, NBA stars Stephen Curry and LeBron James, Katy Perry, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Meryl Streep, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Justin Timberlake, Adele, Jay Z, Amy Schumer, Ellen DeGeneres, Snoop Dogg, Kendall Jenner, Jon Bon Jovi, Jesse Eisenberg, Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez.
