Kate McKinnon opened the latest Saturday Night Live with a stirring performance of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah', in character as Hillary Clinton.

It was an emotional cold open for the first SNL since Donald Trump won the 2016 US presidential election, a departure from the show's usual comical take on politics.

"I'm not giving up, and neither should you," McKinnon said straight into the camera at the end of her song.

Cohen, a Canadian musical legend, died Friday (NZ time), two days after Trump was elected president.

McKinnon portrayed Clinton throughout the electoral campaign before the former First Lady's stunning defeat to the reality TV star and billionaire, who was portrayed by Alec Baldwin on SNL.

Following the musical opening, comedian and guest host Dave Chapelle gave a monologue that dealt with Mr Trump's win and race relations in the US.
