While it's true The Simpsons did pick Donald Trump to be US President 16 years ago, some misconceptions about the cartoon comedy's powers of political prediction are doing the rounds.

Myth 1: The Simpsons predicted President Donald Trump will be followed by the country's first female president

In the 2000 episode 'Bart to the Future', the elder Simpson child is granted a vision of his future by a Native American mystic.

In it, Lisa is indeed the US president, with Milhouse van Houten her Secretary of the Treasury.

"I am proud to be America's first straight female President," she tells a throng of reporters - the implication being she was preceded at some point in time by a gay female president.

Her first term does, however, follow Mr Trump, who left her "quite a budget crunch" to deal with.

"How bad is it, Secretary van Houten?" she asks from her chair in the Oval Office.

"We're broke," he replies.

Myth 2: The Simpsons predicted Donald Trump would descend on an escalator at the announcement he would run for President, while a supporter drops a sign

The Simpsons clip does bear an uncanny resemblance to the real events - but that's because it came weeks afterwards.

Mr Trump announced his bid in June 2015. Video showed him riding an escalator and waving to the crowd, as his wife Melania followed behind and a supporter dropped a sign.

The Simpsons short 'Trumptastic Voyage', with Homer substituted for Melania, was released a few weeks later in July.

It's also clearly a product of the modern Simpsons era - it's in crystal-clear and widescreen HD, while in 2000 the show was still broadcast in 4:3 and in standard definition.

'A warning to America'

The writer of the 'Bart to the Future' episode said back in March that he settled on President Trump so Lisa would have to deal with "problems that were beyond her fixing, that everything went as bad as it possibly could".

"That's why we had Trump be President before her," Dan Greaney told the Hollywood Reporter.

"[It] just seemed like the logical last stop before hitting bottom. It was pitched because it was consistent with the vision of America going insane."

Another thing the episode predicts is that the US will become heavily indebted to China - a problem the real Mr Trump has vowed to avoid by charging massive tariffs on its exports to the US.
