Alien: Covenant unleashes horrifying first trailer

Alien fans can rejoice this festive season with the release of the terrifying first trailer for the Alien: Covenant film, which shows the series returning to its dark and violent best.

Director Ridley Scott's new film is set on the colony ship Covenant, sent on a journey to a faraway planet across the galaxy.

However, the planet holds a horrible secret, and the crew soon become engulfed in a deep space nightmare.

The trailer starts with a woman running down a hallway, before refusing to help another woman escape from a locked room - leaving her trapped while an alien bursts from a man's body.

Other familiar elements include the crew reaching the planet, the finding of an alien starship, and some unfortunate explorers discovering some suspicious egg pods.

Alien: Covenant is the follow-up to 2012's Prometheus. It stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, James Franco, and Noomi Rapace, and will be released worldwide in May 2017.
