The five-minute pyrotechnic display will be complimented by a Kiwi-themed laser animation show and countdown beamed onto two sides of the Sky Tower from 9pm.

There's also the Wondergarden Festival at Silo Park, which is described as "a place for friends, families, party people of all ages and music lovers from all walks of life."

The festival is offering a full afternoon and evening of music acts, as well as roaming performers, lighting installations and street food.

Wellington closes the year with a family friendly event at Frank Kitts Park on the waterfront, featuring fireworks and a special countdown at 9pm for children who can't make it until midnight.

There will be plenty of opportunities for dancing, with the New Orleans swing septet the Wellington Shake-Em-On-Downers kicking things off. The Rodger Fox Big Band takes the stage at 10pm playing all the best New Year's Eve party hits from the 1980s on.

  • NELSON

Upper Trafalgar St will host a free event from 8pm, with a New Year's Eve countdown on the church steps.

The family-friendly event is free for locals and visitors, and features great music and art performances. It will be followed by a laser and fireworks show.

From 6:30pm the park will host a celebration with Natural Magic and Christchurch Faerie Circle, a kids' DJ, local band Better than Bacon and a "kids' midnight" countdown at 8:30pm.

From 9pm DJ Andy Pulzar, Black Velvet Band, The Easy Hearts and Piper start playing, leading into the New Year's midnight fireworks display.

  • QUEENSTOWN

There's a great line-up of live music, entertainment, food from 7:30pm at Earnslaw Park.

Set across two stages, the event is free for the whole family and will be followed by fireworks at midnight.

The event kicks off at the Tongariro South Domain, where there'll be kid-friendly activities like a lolly scramble and glow stick giveaway.
