George Michael death caps off cruel year for entertainment world

After hearing the news of George Michael's death, William Shatner tweeted a simple question many are asking: "Is this year over yet?"

George Michael, Prince, David Bowie, Alan Rickman - the list of celebrity deaths in 2016 seems much longer than usual.

Bowie died in January after a secret battle with cancer - his passing drew fans together.

Just days later, the man who brought Severus Snape to our screens also succumbed to the disease. Rickman is remembered as one of the most warmly admired British actors.

In April, Prince died of a Fentanyl overdose at his Paisley Park home. In New York fans paid tribute they only way that felt right - dancing in the streets.

In June the sporting world was rocked by the loss of Muhammad Ali. The boxer was renowned as one of the most significant and celebrated sports figures of the 20th century.

Influential songwriter Leonard Cohen died last month aged 82. Best known for his song, 'Hallelujah', he was also a novelist and poet.

We lost our very own mod - homegrown hero Ray Columbus - last month.

Zsa Zsa Gabor, Gene Wilder, Ronnie Corbett and Glenn Frey of the Eagles were some of the others who died in 2016, but the list is simply too long to name them all.

Here's hoping 2017 will be a little kinder to those who grace our screens.
