Mockasin Arabia Finn to headline Auckland's first-ever Wondergarden Festival

Aucklanders have one less reason to leave town to celebrate New Year's Eve, with a new, all-ages music festival in the heart of the city.

The collaboration between Connan Mockasin, Lawrence Arabia and Liam Finn will headline the city's first ever Wondergarden Festival at Silo Park.

Last performing together in 2009, the trio hit the stage for the first time since then in April at Auckland's Crystal Palace Theatre.

They've been working on individual stuff too - Mockasin, material for 2018; Arabia, a new album this year; and Finn, a collaborative album with his dad Neil.

But the thrill of working together and feeding off each other never quite went away.

"The three of us especially have always found ourselves all back together, staying up late, giggling and imagining what the next thing we could all do together might be," Finn says.

Enter Auckland's new Wondergarden Festival at Silo Park - a brand new New Year's Eve event, at the previous home of Laneway.

Plus with Mockasin and Finn having never spent a New Year's in Auckland before, it's almost fitting they're the ones to headline it.

"It's by far the biggest city in the country and if you're going to live there, why wouldn't you be there on New Year's? It never really made sense to me," Mockasin says.

Wondergarden says it's for everyone, with street performers and entertainment for kids, and the trio know they'll have to strike a special chord.

"Making sure that it's exciting at the right times and introspective at the right times and sentimental at the right times and all those things that make New Year's special," Finn says.
