Johannah Deakin, mother of former One Direction star Louis Tomlinson, has died aged 43 after a battle with leukaemia.

Ms Deakin was diagnosed with an aggressive form of the cancer earlier in the year and died on Wednesday morning (local time) in Sheffield, northern England.

Tomlinson, 24, was the oldest of her seven children and father to her only grandchild, Freddie, who was born in January.

Other One Direction members have reached out to the family on Twitter, with both Zayn Malik and Liam Payne tweeting their condolences.

Ms Deakin's last Instagram post was a tribute to her son, with a photo of him and a caption reading: "My perfect boy".

Tomlinson is set to perform at the X Factor final on Saturday night and the performance will now be a tribute to his mother.

Ms Deakin's husband Dan paid a touching tribute to his wife in a statement, saying she was incredibly selfless and worked tirelessly for charity.

"It wasn't uncommon for Johannah to hear through the media of an individual in need of assistance, and she would immediately make it her objective to get that person what they often desperately needed, and rarely without success," he said.

"These are the things that made Johannah happy and content in life, and all of which for me made her simply the perfect wife and best friend to face each day with."
