Bruce Springsteen covers group the B Street Band has pulled out of performing at Donald Trump's inauguration as US president on January 20.

The musicians say they're cancelling out of respect for Springsteen himself, after the iconic rocker and Hillary Clinton supporter described Trump as a "flagrant, toxic narcissist" and "a moron".

"With deepest apologies to our fans and the New Jersey Inaugural Ball committee, the B Street Band is withdrawing from performing at this year's inauguration Gala," the band says in a statement to Backstreets, a Bruce Springsteen fan website.

"Our decision is based solely on the respect and gratitude we have for Bruce and the E Street Band."

The B Street Band has performed nearly 200 gigs a year since 1980. They've twice before played at the New Jersey State Society of Washington DC's ball, which is held every four years to welcome in the new President.

"Bruce's music has been the foundation of our livelihood. The B Street Band would not exist without the talents of Bruce and our E Street brothers," says the band.

"We are most grateful to these rock legends and look forward to many more years of emulating and performing the Forever Music, of Bruce Springsteen."

President-elect Trump's troubles in getting acts to perform at his inauguration ceremony or the many balls being held around the main event have been well documented. Several invited performers were either personally turned down by the former Celebrity Apprentice host, refused to play themselves, or agreed to play then later cancelled.

The inaugration line-up as it stands at the moment consists of country music superstar Toby Keith, late '90s - early '00s rockers 3 Doors Down, teen America's Got Talent runner-up Jackie Evancho, most of dance crew Radio City Rockettes, country singer Lee Greenwood, covers band The Piano Guys, country ensemble The Frontmen of Country and DJ Ravidrums, former personal DJ of porn mogul Hugh Hefner.
