Gospel singer Kim Burrell calls gays 'perverted' before Ellen appearance

American gospel singer Kim Burrell says she makes "no excuses or apologies" for a sermon at a Houston church where she preached about gays and lesbians being perverted.

Cellphone footage has emerged of the singer speaking at her Love & Liberty Fellowship Church on Thursday.

In the video she says: "I came to tell you about sin.... That perverted homosexual spirit, and the spirit of delusion and confusion, it has deceived many men and women, and it's caused us pain on the body of Christ".

The footage emerged days before the singer's scheduled appearance on talk show Ellen next week, which is hosted by openly gay Ellen DeGeneres.

DeGeneres is yet to comment on the situation.

However, Burrell's duet partner in the upcoming performance, Pharrell Williams, has taken to social media to condemn "hate speech of any kind", although he made no specific reference to Burrell.

The pair are scheduled to sing 'I See Victory' from the soundtrack of the new movie Hidden Figures.

Burrell has since posted two Facebook Live videos in response to the online backlash.

"I make no excuses or apologies. My heart is as pure as it comes... I've been out here too long, speaking strong to back track," she says.

However despite not taking back her comments, she claimed her words have been twisted by "the enemy".

"What was posted was not all that I preached,"

"The only reason I'm giving it attention is because so many people seem to be affected by something that is such a lie. I never said that all gays were going to hell. That never came out of my mouth."

Burrell remains insistent she was talking about sin and not specifically homosexuals or the LGBT community.

"To every person that is dealing with the homosexual spirit... I love you because God loves you but God hates the sin in you, and me [SIC]."
