Lena Dunham thanks magazine for untouched photo

The cast of Girls (Glamour)

Lena Dunham has praised women's magazine Glamour for leaving her "cellulite" untouched in a cover photo.

The 30-year-old Girls creator features with co-stars Allison Williams, Zosia Mamet and Jemima Kirke on the magazine's February cover, in an issue said to be 100 percent produced by women.

Dunham took to Instagram to say she was proud to have her thigh "on full imperfect display" in the photo.

"Thank you to @glamourmag for letting my cellulite do the damn thing on newsstands everywhere today," she wrote.

"This body is on the cover of a magazine that millions of women will read, without photoshop [sic], my thigh on full imperfect display. Whether you agree with my politics, like my show or connect to what I do, it doesn't matter - my body isn't fair game."

The emotional post recounts her being teased by peers over her looks as a teen, then by strangers on the internet after she found fame.

"Haters are gonna have to get more intellectual and creative with their disses in 2017 because none of us are going to be scared into muumuus by faceless basement dwellers, or cruel blogs, or even our partners and friends," says Dunham.

"Thank you to the women in Hollywood (and on Instagram!) leading the way, inspiring and normalising the female form in EVERY form."

The sixth and final season of Girls premieres in the US on HBO next month.
