Carrie Fisher won't be recreated digitally for Star Wars: Episode IX.

Following reports the filmmakers were in discussions with Fisher's estate, the Disney-owned Lucasfilm issued a statement denying the late Princess Leia actress would be brought back to life via computer.

"We don't normally respond to fan or press speculation, but there is a rumour circulating that we would like to address," the statement read.

"We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher's performance as Princess or General Leia Organa."

BBC reported the filmmakers were after the rights to use Fisher's likeness.

"Carrie Fisher was, is, and always will be a part of the Lucasfilm family. She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honour everything she gave to Star Wars."

Fisher's likeness was recreated in a brief scene at the end of Rogue One, a prequel to 1977's Episode IV - A New Hope. The 60-year-old actress reprised the role in 2015's Episode VII: The Force Awakens, and had completed shooting scenes for Episode XIII when she died after suffering a heart attack.

Rogue One heavily featured a digital recreation of Peter Cushing's Grand Moff Tarkin. Cushing died in 1994, but his character's role in the new film was too vital to leave him out.

It's not clear how the Star Wars writers will handle Fisher's absence from Episode IX, due out in 2019.
