Wellington folk musician's 'summer' video hit by weather bomb

Usually when no one shows up to your music video shoot, it's a disaster.

Not so for folk musician Graeme James, who's been gifted an unlikely viral hit.

Wellington filmmaker Tim Hamilton was scheduled to shoot a video for James' song 'News from Nowhere' on Thursday, with the theme 'summer at the beach'.

Thursday was hardly summery though, with a weather bomb detonating over much of the country.

"Everything was getting munted, so I thought, 'Where will it be munted the most?'" Hamilton told the Dominion Post.

"I've had several near-death experiences when making films before... and this was another one of them."

He started shooting solo at 7am at the Pt Halswell lighthouse, getting about an hour's filming in. He sent the results to James, not expecting him to like it.

But James told the paper he loved it so much, he made it the official music video for his new record of the same name.

He said it reminded him of his early busking days, playing in Wellington's "ridiculous winds".

More than 10,000 people have already watched the video since James uploaded it on Thursday afternoon.

"This seems about right for Wellington summer at the beach," one fan commented on Facebook.

"Can't beat Wellington on a good day," joked another.

The weather's expected to ease on Friday, but if Hamilton wants to record a sequel, the weekend's expected to bring more wind and rain to much of the country.
