The man who laid down the beats on some of James Brown's biggest funk hits has died.

Clyde Stubblefield became known as the 'Funky Drummer', from the 1970 Brown song of the same name.

His skills on the kit were heavily sampled by hip hop artists in the 1980s and 1990s, including the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Run-DMC, NWA and Dr Dre, as well as synth-rockers Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails, and musical polymath Prince.

According to the-breaks.com, the dozens of songs that feature the beat from 'Funky Drummer' include NWA's 'F**k The Police', Public Enemy's 'Fight the Power' and Nine Inch Nails' 'Piggy'.

Stubblefield joined Brown's band in 1965, and played on hits including 'Cold Sweat', 'Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud' and 'Ain't it Funky Now'.

Other artists he worked with include Otis Redding, Bootsy Collins, Chuck D of Public Enemy and The Roots.

Stubblefield was 73.
