Forget gangs, Wairoa rappers are taking over town

An unlikely rap duo from Wairoa has released a new music video and it's destined to be a club banger in the small Hawkes Bay town.

OK, there aren't any clubs in Wairoa, but you get the idea.

American Zach Stark and Kiwi Ratima Hauraki are good mates and started rapping together last year, recording two songs which featured on Three's Story programme in December.

Stark recently moved to Wairoa to run the local theatre after traveling the world.

Hauraki, who describes himself as a "reformed bad boy", has never left the small town, notorious for its strong gang presence.

Despite their differences, the pair bonded over a shared love of hip-hop and Stark's desire to help change perceptions of the town.

But not everyone understands the friendship.

"People are looking at me and him like, OK, what's a nice guy like Zach doing with myself, due to the fact that I do have a bad reputation here in town because of my past," says Hauraki.

Their new music video '111' was shot in and around Wairoa and has been published on YouTube.
