Judy Garland 'groped' by Wizard of Oz Munchkins, memoir claims

Judy Garland was groped by actors playing Munchkins on the set of The Wizard of Oz, it's been claimed.

The actress, who was 16 when she played Dorothy in the classic film, said her life was made "miserable" by the short actors.

The claims have emerged in a memoir written by Garland's ex-husband Sid Luft.

Luft died in 2005 and his unfinished memoir was never published, but excerpts have been obtained by The Sun.

Some of the Munchkins allegedly put their hands under Judy Garland's dress.

"[The Munchkins] thought they could get away with anything because they were so small," he wrote.

"They would make Judy's life miserable on set by putting their hands under her dress. The men were 40 or more years old."

The alleged bad behaviour of the Munchkin actors in the 1939 film has become the stuff of legend.

Garland, who died in 1969, once said they were "drunks". The film's producer Mervyn LeRoy talked of having to call police to hotel orgies, and there was also a report one Munchkin had to be rescued from a toilet bowl after becoming drunk and falling in.
