Kiwi acting coach's vital role in Oscar-favourite

On the eve of the Oscars, one film tipped to take home some statuettes has a vital Kiwi connection.

Veteran actress turned acting coach Miranda Harcourt was personally requested to work on the film Lion.

The film is up for six Oscars, including Best Supporting Actor for Dev Patal and Best Supporting Actress for Nicole Kidman.

But there's no category for the person who nurtures those great performances. 

Ms Harcourt says her role of acting coach is "kind of a secret job".

"It's like being a really good bra. You just want to think that your body does that naturally, but really there's some serious engineering going on. And that's the same as being an acting coach."
