A Chinese boy band has revealed the truth - they're actually made up of women.

FFC-Acrush is made up of five members, Lu Keran, An Jun Xi, Peng Xi Chen, Min Jun Qian and Lin Fan.

The group of androgynous tomboys were showcased at music events called Husband Exhibition, held at Chinese universities - "husbands" being the term used by female fans for male stars who they find particularly attractive.

But the group had a surprise for fans - they're not men.

FFC-Acrush launched in 2016, and have already captured the hearts of female fans. Their fan page on Chinese social media site Weibo now has nearly 900,000 followers.

The group's agent, Zhou Xiaobai, told Quartz that women prefer FFC-Acrush to normal boy bands because the members can understand them better.

Mr Zhou said the group began dressing androgynously early in their lives and the members are referred to using a gender-free phrase - meishaonian - which translates as "handsome youths".

Group leader Lu says that while she receives love letters from women, she isn't allowed to discuss her own or her teammates' sexual orientations.
