Jack Sparrow in deep water in new Pirates of the Caribbean trailer

Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow is making a return for the fifth and final instalment of the Pirates of the Caribbean film series - and he's got another crew of undead sailors baying for his blood.

The last movie of the franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, brings Captain Jack face-to-face with a new villain, pirate hunter Armando Salazar, played by No Country For Old Men star Javier Bardem.

The trailer alludes to a deep rivalry between Sparrow and the Spanish antagonist, who is intent on getting revenge on the man who "took everything" from him and "filled [him] with rage" earlier in their careers.

Like previous Pirates films, the plot centres around Sparrow's quest for an artefact that equips him with certain powers or abilities that save him from danger.

In Dead Men Tell No Tales, Captain Jack's only hope to escape the bloodthirsty Salazar is by finding the fabled Trident of Poseidon, a relic that gives its possessor control over the oceans.

Geoffrey Rush and Kevin McNally return to the cast as Captain Barbossa and Mr Gibbs respectively, while up-and-coming actors Brenthon Thwaites and Kaya Scodelario have been brought in to effectively replace Hollywood stars Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom, who appeared in the first three instalments.

Thwaites and Scodelario will be portraying new characters Henry and Carina Smyth,

The Pirates of the Caribbean series has earned nearly $5.3 billion at the box office, making it the 11th highest-grossing film series in history - and with one more to go, it is likely to rise even further up that list.
