Joss Whedon to direct Batgirl movie

Batgirl first appeared in 1967 as Barbara Gordon, daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon

Avengers filmmaker Joss Whedon is set to bring Batgirl to the big screen for Warner Bros.

Whedon is close to signing a deal to write, direct and produce an untitled Batgirl film as part of the DC Extended Universe, which this includes this year's Wonder Woman and Justice League.

Batgirl isn't the only Batman spin-off to be announced, with a Nightwing standalone film also in the pipeline.

She's never had her own standalone film before and Buffy  creator Whedon seems ideal for her first. Other characters from Gotham are set to feature in the film.

There are no signs that Batgirl will show up in Justice League, which is the DC equivalent of Marvel's ensemble film Avengers.

Directed by Zack Snyder, Justice League will feature Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller as the Flash, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Ciarán Hinds as Steppenwolf, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, Amber Heard as Mera and Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor.
