Logan scores record opening weekend box office

Hugh Jackman's final performance as Wolverine has roared into worldwide cinemas and opened as the most successful film of the year so far.

Logan has already clawed in US$238 million at the global box office, with US$85 million of it coming from North America alone.

The film is chock-full of gory violence and swearing, with a representative of its studio Fox describing it as "one of the truest movies to the source material in the comic book universe that's ever been done".

Comic book adaptations are usually watered-down for a US rating lower than R, with the aim of making more money by being more easily seen by children.

In 2016, Fox's Deadpool proved R-rated comic book adaptations could make significant revenue. Its worldwide total haul was US$783 million - more than any other R-rated film in history.

Far from the first superhero movie to include adult content, the Ryan Reynolds movie's success nonetheless encouraged studios to release other comic book adaptations made for more mature audiences.

Logan has scored the best opening for the solo Wolverine movies and the fifth-best for an R-rated movie ever.

The box office success, coupled with the near universally positive reviews, are likely to encourage yet more big-budget, R-rated superhero movies.
