One of New Zealand's finest musical exports has released the highly anticipated music video for brand new track 'Green Light' ahead of her first album in four years, entitled Melodrama.
It's the first taste of her second album for fans of the Kiwi pop star - a follow-up to her 2013 smash hit Pure Heroine - and it's a more upbeat style of dance music than they're used to.
The 'Royals' hitmaker carved out a niche for herself in the pop music industry with her distinctive moody, slightly restrained sound - but 'Green Light' is a buoyant and punchy track that sounds more like Florence & the Machine and Robyn than her previous work.
Lorde herself took to Twitter to say the new song was "kinda unexpected", describing it as "complex and funny and sad and joyous" and promising "it'll make you DANCE".
The video for 'Green Light' garnered 500,000 views in a matter of hours.
Speaking to The Edge's Jay-Jay, Dom and Randell, Lorde said the track was "kind of about the last kind of year or so of my life".
"I moved out of home and - it's my own house - and basically had this amazing year of independence and freedom and figuring out all this stuff about myself."
She also revealed 'Green Light' was a tale of heartbreak related to her well-reported break-up with Kiwi photographer James Lowe.
"It started with a relationship ending – so it's kind of a heartbreak song but it's sort of more about that journey to being okay in the end. Because I am okay – I'm great, and the record feels that way.
"It's a complex song – there's a lot going on."
On Wednesday night, the Devonport-raised singer debuted a five-second clip of the song on the streets of Auckland.
Lorde fans were given a map indicating three locations which had what are thought to be samples of the song's lyrics. At a CBD location, the audio sample was played and amateur footage of it was widely shared online.
The 'Green Light' video is directed by Grant Singer, who has worked with the likes of Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Skrillex, Future, Ariana Grande, Zayn Malik, Clams Casino, Sleigh Bells, Sky Ferreira and Ariel Pink.
Singer on Wednesday described the video as "one of [his] favourites".
