Lorde's first new music in years has been met with glowing responses from Rolling Stone, NME and Pitchfork.
The Kiwi songstress dropped 'Green Light' on Friday morning as the lead single off her second album, a song she likens to a drunk girl crying and dancing after breaking up with her boyfriend.
Indeed, the song actually is inspired by Lorde - real name Ella Yelich-O'Connor - splitting from long-time boyfriend, James Lowe.
Rolling Stone calls the 'Green Light' video "electrifying", while Pitchfork heralds the song as a "heartbreak anthem" and the Melodrama album cover art as "amazing".
British music bible NME has reviewed the track, calling it a "euphoric rocket that'll have you giving thanks for her return".
"She sounds a lot angrier and more theatrical than she did on her 2013 debut. Her voice is raspier, a touch deeper, still with that elegance and poise she emerged with, but with it pushed further down in favour of a messier emotions," writes the magazine's Rhian Daly.
"'Green Light' might be about parting ways with a significant other, but its creator makes it sound like the most freeing experience of all time; a rush of overwhelming, giddy feeling and a fresh possibility of being able to do anything. It's the kind of song you're constantly searching for when you're stuck in a rut - a proverbial rocket to drag you up by the collar, dust you down and set you back on the right track."
Fellow pop star Katy Perry calls the new track "incredible".
Meanwhile, in addition to the interview she gave The Edge FM this morning, Lorde also spoke with Zane Lowe for his Beats 1 show on Apple Music.
Her comments shed more light on her new music and are being widely reported on in international media.
"The song is really about those moments kind of immediately after your life changes and about all the silly little things that you gravitate towards," says Lorde.
"I say, 'She thinks you love the beach, you're such a liar'. What the f**k, she thinks you like the beach?! You don't like the beach! It's those little stupid things."
The 20-year-old admits it's an upbeat song, considering it's about heartache - but explains that it's not only about the messy side of a break-up, but also the healing that comes afterwards.
"It sounds so happy and then the lyrics are so intense obviously. And I realised I was like, 'how come this thing is coming out so joyous sounding?'
"I realised this is that drunk girl at the party dancing around crying about her ex-boyfriend who everyone thinks is a mess. That's her tonight and tomorrow she starts to rebuild. And that's the song for me."
As for 'Green Light' inspiration, Lorde's ex James Lowe, he has posted online since the song's release, but it's about his latest work - with no reference at all to hers.
