Call of Duty WWII announced

For the fourteenth main Call of Duty game, the franchise is going back to where it all began - World War II.

Activision on Saturday officially announced Call of Duty: WWII, saying the first footage of the game will be debuted on April 26.

WWII is being developed by Sledgehammer Games, the Activision studio behind 2014's Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, as well as assisting on Modern Warfare 3.

Sledgehammer is run by Michale Condrey and Glen Schofield, who previously worked at Visceral on the Dead Space series.

The last time a Call of Duty title was set in World War II was 2008's Word at War, after the franchise's first three games - released 2003 - 2006 - were set in the conflict.

In recent years, the series has favoured science-fiction over historical combat and been set in the future.

While it's tempting to think WWII is a response to rival franchise Battlefield's success in going back to World War I last year, Sledgehammer Games has been working on the new Call of Duty since before Battlefield 1 was announced.

Call of Duty: WWII is likely to be released this November.
