Hollywood stalwart Johnny Depp has surprised a boat-load of punters at Disneyland in California, donning the costume of his iconic character Jack Sparrow on the theme park's Pirates of the Caribbean ride.

In footage captured by a number of those on the ride, Depp can be seen standing at the helm of a ship on the attraction, and conversing with people - many of them screaming with excitement - in character as they came past.

The positive publicity will be a nice change for Depp, who has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons following his high-profile divorce from Amber Heard and subsequent domestic violence accusations.

The moment is likely to be part of a promotional push ahead of the fifth instalment of the Pirates franchise. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is released in cinemas on May 29 worldwide.

In what's promised to be the last movie of the franchise brings Captain Jack face-to-face with a new villain, pirate hunter Armando Salazar, played by No Country For Old Men star Javier Bardem.

Like previous Pirates films, the plot centres around Sparrow's quest for an artefact that equips him with certain powers or abilities capable of saving him from danger.
