Kiwi singer Lorde found fame with a song about Cristal, jet planes and diamond-encrusted watches, but there once was a time all she craved was a fancy loaf of bread.

Her mother Sonja Yelich on Monday morning shared a school report Lorde wrote when she was just six years old. The topic? Vogel's bread.

"My favorite bread is Vogels fruit bread because it tastes spicy," Lorde - then known as Ella - wrote.

"When I felt the bread it was squishy. It is brown," she stated matter-of-factly, yet to develop the evocative lyrical skills she'll one day put to good use on hits like 'Royals' and 'Tennis Court'.

"The sultanas are black. It is my absolute favorite because I love fruit. It looks good. and that is my report of Vogels fruit bread. Ella."

Impressive writing for a six-year-old - American spelling, missing apostrophes and a missed capital 'A' aside.

Lorde's sophomore album Melodrama is out in a month.

Her mother married her long-time partner Vic O'Connor earlier this month.
