Anne-Marie talks music, Ed Sheeran and her hidden talent

Anne-Marie is one of the UK's biggest breakout stars.

She featured in Clean Bandit's number one hit 'Rockabye', and has just released her new single 'Ciao Adios'.

She was nominated for three Brit Awards this year, has toured with drum and bass band Rudimental - and she's good mates with New Zealand's favourite Englishman, Ed Sheeran.

"He's a really great person, amazing musician, he's a great person to look up to," she told Newshub on Monday.

Anne-Marie's in Auckland for a one-off showcase to promote her upcoming debut album.

The singer-songwriter says she fell in love with music at a young age, starting out in theatre.

When she was just five years old she auditioned for Les Miserables - without her parents knowing.

"I didn't know I could sing, my parents didn't know I could sing. I went to the audition, got the part and I was like, 'Oh Mum, I'm in Les Mis', and she was like, 'What!?'," Anne-Marie said.

He parents quickly put her into singing lessons and it's clearly paid off.

But it hasn't always been just about music. Anne-Marie's a three-time world karate champion and she credits the sport for teaching her to work hard.

"It's a very weird thing to put together isn't it, music and karate," she said.

"You need that so much for this career, it's so difficult. It's obviously very rewarding but at the same time you have to work so hard, so it taught me a lot about that."

Her hard work has earned her plenty of stage time, but the 26-year-old says she still gets nervous.

"I get so nervous every single gig I do, whether it's a big crowd or a small crowd, it's the same feeling I get. But I kind of love that feeling."

She'll have to fight the butterflies when she eventually returns to New Zealand - hopefully, for her own tour.
