Rock royalty gathered in Hollywood on Friday (local time) to remember the life of one of their own.

Chris Cornell performed before fans in Detroit mere hours before taking his own life last Thursday, leaving behind a wife and two young kids.

The Soundgarden and Audioslave rocker retired to the MGM Grand Casino Hotel after the Fox Theater gig, where he died, according to a coroner's report.

Cornell had spoken openly of his drug and alcohol addiction in the past, as well as periods of depression and agoraphobia.

The private service opened to Soundgarden's recent song 'The Promise', and included a eulogy by Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello and a rendition of 'Hallelujah' by Linkin Park's Chester Bennington.

"Chris was as melodic as the Beatles, as rocking as Sabbath, and as haunting as Edgar Allan Poe," Morello said.

Also in attendance were Cornell's Soundgarden bandmates Kim Thayil and Matt Cameon, Nirvana's Krist Novoselic, Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament, Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins, and Metallica's James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich.

Actors Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Josh Brolin, James Franco, and Fred Armisen were also there.

Red roses were placed on Cornell's grave marker at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, which reads, "Voice of our generation and an artist for all time."

The memorial site reopens to the public on Saturday at 3pm local time.

Soundgarden was one of the leading bands in the grunge music movement in the 1980s and '90s, releasing albums such as Down on the Upside and the Grammy-winning Superunknown.
