Milkshake art created for soul singer Teeks

It's New Zealand Music Month, and what better way to celebrate fresh Kiwi talent than by creating personalised milkshakes?

That's what Mt Eden's Cereal Killa café's done for soul singer Teeks, ahead of his debut EP release next month.

The café created a Caramello monstrosity for the artist.

In two weeks Teeks will release the first single from his EP, The Grapefruit Skies. He's been working on the project for about two years and recorded some of the songs in New York.

Teeks, whose real name is Te Karehana, grew up in a small, rural area of Northland. He says he was largely influenced by the music his parents listened to.

"My dad listened to a lot of music and that's what I was forced to listen to, he listened to a lot of Elvis Presley, Bob Marley. My mum listened to Nora Jones," he told Newshub.

He says the tight-knit community, and cultural traditions such as kapa haka, also helped shape him into the artist he is today.

"I grew up with Māori music as well my whole life and just going through that in school and I think that had a huge impact on my music as well because kapa haka is pretty much soul music, but Māori soul music."

He hopes to one day record a song in his first language, Te Reo, but says it's harder to write songs in Māori than in English.

Teeks wants to write more music, and hopes to collaborate with some of the big names - like Adele.

"I went to her concert and it poured down with rain the whole night but it was amazing, the best show I've been to probably," he said.

He also dreams of one day performing at Coachella and to attend the Grammys.

"Not necessarily to win anything but just to go there would be amazing!"

His single 'If Only' is out May 26.
