Ominous House of Cards trailer released

Highly acclaimed political drama House of Cards is set to return at the end of May - and a full-length trailer has been released previewing just what's in store for season five.

It appears as though the series will retain the sinister nature that has made it so popular - although it appears to be taking the gloominess to a new level.

The show, which follows the murky political world of US President Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) and First Lady Claire (Robin Wright), portrays a dystopian presidency - and with the backdrop of the US' current political climate, it makes for even more interesting viewing.

Narration from President Underwood as he talks to wife Claire throughout the trailer shows him making fun of the intelligence and psyche of the average American voter.

"The American people don't know what's best for them. I do. I know exactly what they need," he says.

"They're like little children, Claire. We have to hold their sticky fingers and wipe their filthy mouths. Teach them right from wrong. Tell what to think and how to feel and what to want.

"They even need help writing their wildest dreams. Crafting their worst fears. Lucky for them, they have me. They have you."

The coming season has Underwood pitted against Republican Will Conway (played by Joel Kinnaman) for the presidency, and there are likely to be many more examples of the shady political underworld that has made House of Cards so popular.

One thing's for sure - Underwood has plans to be around for more than just the maximum two presidential terms.

"Underwood, 2016. 2020. 2024. 2028. 2032. 2036. One nation, Underwood," he can be heard saying at the end of the trailer.

The new season is available to watch on Netflix from May 30.
