Saturday Night Live's Spicer-Huckabee skit labelled 'sexist'

US politician Mike Huckabee has come out firing against renowned skit show Saturday Night Live, saying a recent sketch featuring a parody of his daughter was "silly, sexist [and] misogynist".

Hollywood heavyweights Melissa McCarthy and Alec Baldwin made an impressive return to the programme last weekend, reprising their now infamous roles as Sean Spicer and Donald Trump.

The skit was most notable because of a kiss shared between those two characters, and because it McCarthy's fifth time hosting Saturday Night Live - a coveted milestone only achieved by those most highly thought of by the show's producers.

But Mr Huckabee brought the attention back to his daughter, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who was played by comedian Aidy Bryant in what was a reasonably tame caricature compared to Baldwin and McCarthy's depictions of President Trump and White House press secretary Sean Spicer.

In real life, Huckabee Sanders has been filling for Spicer while he's away and been noted for her swift takedowns of a number of members of the press corp - drawing suggestions she may replace him in the longer term.

But Mr Huckabee, who has been unsuccessful in two attempts at being the Republican candidate for presidency in 2008 and 2016, said she has not interest in that - and took a dig at Saturday Night Live's writers.

"I thought it was a little bit silly, sexist [and] misogynist, but my daughter is certainly capable of handling a whole lot worse than that," he told Fox News Business.

"She does very well, and I'm grateful for the fact that she's capable of doing whatever job she's handed, but she's not trying to replace Sean Spicer. She loves Sean, respects him, works wonderfully with him, and has nothing but high regard for him.

"I don't think that somebody throwing a dart at her is gonna detract her one bit. She's a whole lot stronger than they think she is," he said.

It is not known whether Aidy Bryant will reprise her role as Huckabee Sanders.
