Stunning trailer for Stephen King's Dark Tower released

A film adaptation of Stephen King's best-selling novel series The Dark Tower is out in cinemas in just a few months' time - and now Sony has released a striking first look at what it will look like.

The film follows the tale of 11-year-old Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor), who has recurring, powerful dreams of a parallel universe, in which gunslinger Roland Deschain (Idris Elba) is on a quest to find a tower.

Deschain must ensure that the Dark Tower, a structure that holds together all of existence, remains upright - but he can't find it, and the villainous Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey) thwarts his every attempt.

The film is not a direct adaptation of King's series of novels, but will draw plenty of inspiration from them - and the film appears to share the dark, phantasmal aura that made the series so popular.

The film is directed by Nikolaj Arcel, a Danish filmmaker who mainly specialised in small indie dramas before making his first foray into the world of big-budget Hollywood blockbusters.

The Dark Tower is scheduled for release on August 4 this year. It's the second major King adaptation to be released in 2017, with the first part of the highly anticipated It out on September 7.
