Tom Hardy will play Venom in an upcoming Spider-Man spinoff, with Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer directing.
Venom is set to be the first movie after Spider-Man: Homecoming in Sony's burgeoning expanded universe of films based on the Marvel Comics character licenses it owns.
In the Marvel Comics universe, Venom has appeared alongside Spider-Man, Iron Man, Deadpool and Hulk, among others.
Hardy, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in The Revenant, is said to be a huge fan of the character and is pictured in a selfie wearing a Venom T-shirt in Sony's official announcement tweet.
It's not the first DC villain Hardy has played, after his turn as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. He was also originally tapped to play Rick Flagg in Suicide Squad before scheduling conflicts forced him to drop out.
Venom is set to release in October, 2018.
