The mayor of Austin, Texas has responded with brutal mockery to an "unfortunate and unusually hostile individual" who wrote him a letter urging a boycott of cinemas hosting women-only screenings of Wonder Woman.
The Alamo Drafthouse cinema in Austin made headlines last month by announcing the special sessions of the first female-led big screen superhero movie, upsetting some men who decried the move as "sexist".
Mayor Steve Adler has gone public with an email he received from one such enraged man calling for a boycott not of the film or the cinema chain, but of the city of Austin itself.
"I hope every man will boycott Austin and do what he can to diminish Austin and to cause damage to the city's image," the author Richard Ameduri told the mayor.
"The theatre that pandered to the sexism typical of women will, I hope, regret its decision."
Mr Adler responded with an open letter, comically informing Mr Ameduri that his email account had been hacked by a "pitiful creature" that was spouting "uninformed and sexist rantings".
"I am writing to alert you that your email account has been hacked by an unfortunate and unusually hostile individual... Please remedy your account's security right away, lest this person's uninformed and sexist rantings give you a bad name. After all, we men have to look out for each other," writes Mr Adler.
"I hesitate to imagine how embarrassed you'd be if someone thought you were upset that a private business was realising a business opportunity by reserving one screening this weekend for women to see a superhero movie. You and I are serious men of substance with little time for the delicate sensitivities displayed by the pitiful creature who maligned your good name and sterling character by writing that abysmal email."
Mr Adler concluded the letter by noting that the views displayed in the original correspondence were "an embarrassment to modernity, decency, and common sense".
It is unknown if Mr Ameduri has responded, or if he has yet viewed the big-screen debut of the 75-year-old feminist icon that he apparently cares so passionately for.
