Oscar darling Daniel Day-Lewis is retiring from acting at the age of 60.
The Gangs of New York star isn't saying why he's quitting, expressing thanks in a brief statement but withholding any reasoning as "private".
Day-Lewis was nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award five times and is the only man to have won three - for My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood and Lincoln.
The statement from his spokesperson reads: "Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject."
Day-Lewis holds both British and Irish citizenship and was knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours in 2014.
His final film, Phantom Thread, will be released later this year.
