Jay Z's mother Gloria Carter has revealed on the rapper's new album 4:44 that she's a lesbian.

"Mama had four kids, but she's a lesbian / Had to pretend so long that she's a thespian," the Jay Z raps on his song 'Smile'.

"Had to hide in the closet, so she medicate / Society shame and the pain was too much to take / Cried tears of joy when you fell in love / Don't matter to me if it's a him or her."

Following his rap verses, Gloria delivers a powerful monologue about what it's like to live "in the shadows".

"Can you imagine what kind of life it is to live? Two lives, happy but not free," she says.

"You live with the fear of just being me.

"But life is short, and it's time to be free. Love who you love, because life isn't guaranteed."

It's the first time Gloria has come out publicly.

The rapper's new album also sees him apologise to his wife Beyoncé over his past infidelities.
