UK crime series Luther is returning to screens.

Both star Idris Elba and Wellington-based screenwriter and series novelist Neil Cross say they have some "unfinished business" to attend to.

"It can't be over, can it? There's so much we don't know. The thing is, we've been asking ourselves the same question," Cross told the BBC.

The BBC ordered four new episodes of the much-loved detective series. Filming starts early next year, with no premiere date set. Luther debuted in 2010 and has aired 18 episodes over four seasons.

"We picked up the phone to some old friends and asked if they'd like to find out what happens next. It turns out, they would. So that's what we're going to do," said Cross.

Elba said he was "thrilled" at the prospect of bringing the series back.

"I look forward to putting the coat back on."
