Trailer released for powerful Boston Marathon bombing biopic

Hollywood actor Jake Gyllenhaal stars in a moving upcoming film about one of the people central to the bombings at the Boston Marathon in 2013.

Entitled Stronger, the movie tells the true story of Boston local Jeff Bauman, who was at the finish line of the race to cheer on his girlfriend Erin Hurley (Tatiana Malsany) when the bomb exploded.

He lost both legs in the terror attack - a cowardly act that resulted in the deaths of three people and injuries to hundreds more - but became a symbol of hope in the aftermath.

Bauman was the subject of one of the day's most harrowing and circulated photographs, and also played a large role in identifying suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev, before going on to write a memoir in 2015 about his experiences.

That memoir, written by Bauman in conjunction with Bret Witter, has now been converted into a film directed by David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express).

The new trailer hints at a stirring and powerful tale of heartbreak, broken relationships and coming to terms with a debilitating injury.

Stronger will be in New Zealand cinemas on October 19.
