Voldemort prequel gets official green light

The Dark Lord will return. That is the official verdict from Warner Bros., who has approved a prequel to the Harry Potter film series, staring a young Lord Voldemort.

The film was launched after a group of Harry Potter fanatics formed Tryangle Films, and raised £13,200 (NZ$24,000) to make a fan film.

"We wondered, 'What made Tom Riddle become Voldemort? What happened in those years, and what really went down at Hogwarts when he came back?'" Gianmaria Pezzatto, one of the founders of Tryangle, told Polygon.

"There are some clues in the books, which have not been transposed at all in the movies, but a lot goes unspoken.

"This is the story we want to tell - the rise of the Dark Lord before Harry Potter and his first demise."

At first, Warner Bros. was unhappy and told Tryangle Films to stop production, but it has now changed its mind.

The first trailer has been released, and Voldemort: Origin of the Heir will be made available later this year online.

The movie stars Stefano Rossi as the young Tom Marvolo Riddle as he begins his rise to power.

The film also stars Maddalena Orcali as new character Grisha MacLaggen - the heir to Gryffindor - who is working to stop him.

The trailer now has more than 2.5 million views on YouTube.
