West Side Story dancing flash mob surprises Queen St

Pedestrians in Auckland's CBD were treated to some brief lunchtime entertainment on Thursday when a group of dancers took over one of the city's main intersections.

At the sign of the green man, the cast of West Side Story rushed out in front of unexpecting passers-by to perform a 30-second snippet from the show, which opens at the Civic Theatre on Thursday night.

It was a brief respite from the grey winter day, which was over as quickly as it started.

West Side Story, which has been billed as one of Broadway's greatest dance musicals, is a Romeo and Juliet-inspired tale of love between members of two rival gangs in 1950s New York City.

The international production visiting Auckland features a number of Broadway performers and has previously toured to Paris, Beijing, Tokyo and London.
