Disney has finally confirmed the cast for its live-action reboot of Aladdin.

At the D23 Expo in California on Saturday (local time), Disney president of production Sean Bailey confirmed that Will Smith has been confirmed to take on the role of the genie. Power Rangers actress Naomi Scott will portray Princess Jasmine and newcomer Mena Massoud will play Aladdin.

Confirming the role of Aladdin will be a relief for the film's producers after reports that Disney and director Guy Ritchie were having trouble finding actors to cast in the now iconic roles. Egyptian-born, Canada-bred Mena was cast after auditioning more than 2000 actors. He is also set to star in the upcoming Jack Ryan television series.

Independence Day actor Smith, 48, has been rumoured to be taking on the genie role for weeks.

It's a role made famous by the late Robin Williams, who voiced the genie in Aladdin and the sequel Aladdin and the King of Thieves.

The actor set to play villain Jafar has not yet been announced, although Peaky Blinders star Tom Hardy is rumoured to be in talks.
