Blake Lively has been cast as a kind of female Jason Bourne in an explosive new film from the team behind the last eight Bond movies.

The Rhythm Section is based on a series of four novels from author Mark Burnell, and will be directed by The Handmaid's Tale director Reed Morano. Long-time Bond team Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are going to produce the film, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Lively will play heroine Stephanie Patrick in the modern adaption of the books, about a woman who's on a self-destructive path after the death of her family in a plane crash - a flight she was meant to be on.

After discovering the crash wasn't an accident, she becomes an assassin to track down those responsible.

Other novels in Burnell's popular series include Gemini, The Third Woman, and Chameleon. There's no word yet on whether Lively is contracted to appear in later films.

The Rhythm Section will begin production later this year, and is set to film in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, and Switzerland.

Lively most recently starred in The Shallows and will appear next in All I See is You, set for release in September this year.
