Hot indie-pop band LANY a little big in a lot of countries

There's a hot new American band in town and they're gearing up to blast Auckland's Powerstation on Wednesday night.

But you'd be forgiven for not knowing who they are, and with good reason.

While a number of bands make it big in their home country, LANY has a small number of devoted fans in a whole bunch of different countries.

"We're actually super scared of being big in one country and not big around the world - at least I am," singer Paul Klein told Newshub.

"We want to get out there and reach as many people as possible."

The three-man indie-pop band from LA is in the fast lane to fame.

Their sound spread across the globe online and now they're now the most streamed artist of all time on Spotify Discover with 65 million plays.

"Paul's lyrics are very universal... It's cool how it can resonate over the entire world," drummer Jake Goss told Newshub.

But the boys learned from mistakes they made in bands before LANY. Klein used to beg people to come to his shows.

"You should never ask, people should be asking you to play a show," he told Newshub.

"So we would just put music online and allow people to fall in love with it over time... and eventually people said, 'When are you going to play a show?'."

The 'wait till you're wanted' approach seems to be working for these three friends, who have found themselves a little bit big in a lot of countries.
