In the very epitome of the phrase 'this could only happen in America', OJ Simpson is getting his own museum.

It's only a pop up, but still, it's already attracted a firestorm of internet controversy.

The museum will appear from 18-22 August this year, in the Coagula Curatorial Gallery in Chinatown, Los Angeles. The museum will feature more than 300 artifacts from Simpson's most famous court case where he was acquitted of the murder of his former wife, Nicole Brown Simpson.

The museum's curator, Adam Papagan, says it should not be seen as controversial despite the backlash.

"Is the documentary on ESPN offensive?" Mr Papagan said. "Is the show with John Travolta offensive? This is something that happened, if you're offended by it you're missing the point. The whole thing is not about him, it's about what he represents."

Papagan argues that the museum is about "a historical event - something that we all lived through" and not about the man himself. He says he aims to present the trial from the point of view of "the people", as opposed to the version that has been documented in the media.

Nevertheless the decision is causing widespread disgust and outrage online.

Many claimed it was fetishising crime and an insult to victims.
