After the waka came the waka rererangi - the aeroplane.
Many have flown our skies, but so much of our aviation history ends up overseas, flying cargo, or wrecked in a hangar.
Now, a campaign aims to bring some of our more notable planes back to NZ.
Bring Our Birds Home is a crowd-funding project, hoping to recover five of this country's most significant planes.
Architect of the campaign is Paul Brennan and he spoke to Duncan Garner.
